The entire length of the Cordillera Huayhuash measures only 30 km, but within this compact area lays an amazing array of peaks. This trip is a circuit of the entire range, the most dazzling hike in Huaraz; a long series of overwhelming views. With more than 20,000 ft. / 6,000m of climbing and 180 km all around.
The SURASACA circuit represents a serious and difficult endeavor, a must for those who love walking side by side with nature. Our route has been designed to cope the most beautiful scenery of Huayhuash areas traversing the alpine section of the Cordillera. Surasaca comes from the name the lake of the same name at the end of our trek.
GRADING C SEASONApril to November PROGRAM 7 days / 6 nights
DAY 1: HUARAZ/PACHACOTO / CUARTELHUAIN | INC: B/BL/D
We pick you up from your hotel in Huaraz and drive towards Quebrada Carpa passing Pachacoto where we can see the strange looking Puya Raymondi plant, with spectacular views of the Cordillera Blanca along the way. Continue over the Huarapasca pass (15,933 ft. / 4,780m) reaching a second pass at Yanashallash (15,600 ft. / 4,680m) with impressive views of Mount Huayhuash , Mount Huallanca and the Cordillera Blanca. Descending to the small village of Huallanca, we follow the San Juan River until crossing the Cuncush pass (15833 ft. / 4,750m) finally arriving to our camp in Cuartelwain. Having lunch along the way.
DAY 2: CUARTELHUAIN/MITUCOCHA LAKE | INC: B/BL/D
We begin the hike with the slow ascent of Cacananpunta (15,666 ft./4,700m) pass, with jagged icy peaks dominating the superb vista. This pass is the watershed of the ice flows into the Pacific to the west and the Amazon to the east. Arrival at lake Mitucocha where we make camp with the snowcapped peaks of Jirishanca Chico (17,969 ft./5,445m) y Grande (19961 ft./ 6049m), Rondoy (19,401 ft./5,879m) and Ninashanca towering above.
DAY 3: MITUCOCA LAKE /CARHUACOCHA | INC: B/BL/D
A hike up the Cathuacocha pass (15,345 ft. / 4,650m) with an incredible panorama including the peaks of Siula, Yerupaja (20,902 ft. / 6,334m) Sarapo, Toro and Jirishanca Chico. Then through an area of Puna (highland meadows) to the camp beside another lake.
DAY 4: CARHUACOCHA/CARNICERO | INC: B/BL/D
Today, we begin a steep ascend, passing by the twin lakes of Atoqshaico. As we arrive to the Carnicero Pass (15,833 ft. / 4,750m) reaching camp beside a series of lakes. Deep below is the Huayhuash valley, with its small settlements of herders and high above are Mounts Carnicero, and Jurau (18,724 ft. / 5674m). From the pass we descend, passing between lakes Chocopata Kocha and Huaraco Kocha and finally arrive to our campsite near the small settlement of Huayhuash.
DAY 5: CARNICERO/VICONGA LAKE| INC: B/BL/D
Today we ascend the Huayhuash pass, through the village of Huayhuash, with the Cordillera Raura looming up in the south. Good views of Mounts Huascanan, Leon, Quesillojanca and Puscanturpa on the way. Descending to make camp beside Lake Viconga.
DAY 6: VICONGA LAKE/CHURIN | INC: B/BL/D
We make the ascent over the Surasaca pass (16,000 ft. / 4,800m), hiking along the shores of lake Surasaca for about an hour until we reach the road, were a bus will be waiting to take us down the Churin valley to the town of Churin, where you can soothe away all those aches and pains in the relaxing waters of the thermal baths. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 7: CHURIN/LIMA | INC: B/L
Depart by bus back though Huaraz and onto the Pan-American Highway, along the coast to Lima.
